A BRITTEN HOLIDAY
In the footsteps of Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten—one of the 20th century’s most beloved holiday music staples—Cantate offers dazzling seasonal gems by Britten that deserve a wider audience. Highlights of the group’s adventurous new CD include the stunning Chorale after an Old French Carol and Christ’s Nativity, written—amazingly—when the composer was just 17. Eric Plutz, acclaimed University Organist at Princeton, is guest artist.
A CROWN OF STARS
Another major Cantate commission, Andrew Earle Simpson’s lushly romantic and visionary wedding oratorio A Crown of Stars celebrates love across history and world traditions. Gisèle Becker leads Cantate and chamber ensemble, soprano Lisa Edwards-Burrs, tenor Joseph Dietrich, and the infectious Maryland State Boychoir (Stephen Holmes, music director). Paired with Alfred Schnittke’s unforgettably haunting Requiem.
THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK
You’ve never heard anything like Maurice Saylor’s playfully brilliant setting of Lewis Carroll’s epic nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark. Gisele Becker conducts Cantate, the jazzy Snark Ensemble, and the Lower School Chorus of the Holton-Arms School. An endlessly inventive Cantate commission—hear why The Washington Post has called this piece “irresistible from start to finish.” Paired with witty new Snark Ensemble scores for silent movies.
SUNSTONE II
Cantate captured in live performance – a feast of soaring, virtuoso 20th century choral masterworks. Sunstone II features 20th century masterpieces of Benjamin Britten, Francis Poulenc, Zoltan Kodaly and William Schuman.
